6 Steps to Run a Zero Waste Campaign
How institutions and communities defines zero waste?
Zero Waste International Alliance recently updated their definition for zero waste concept in December 2018 to become more inclusive. it includes the preservation of all resources through the retrieval of the products, material and packaging but without threating the human health & the environment. consequently, this can be achieved without burning or releasing them in to air, water or even lands. Zero waste is an objective goal defined by various entities & institution as timely pounded efforts to achieve ethical goal, through guiding people to change their life style & practices to decrease their waste generations.
1st step: Establish a well-defined task force
Well defined team should be established through organizing the work
forces specifically and correctly. The work force should be divided in to organized
teams &staffs, each staff should be responsible for a certain task to avoid
overlapping of actions and to reduce the unnecessary actions .so that, the
whole campaign wouldn’t only be effective but also efficient. The task force
should comprise of Waste Reduction and Recycling Facilities staff, a sorting
crew staff & mangers to monitor the overall process evaluate activates. All
of the task force practitioners should be responsible of the communication
during the workflow also, they know how to deal with the typical day issues as
and have direct respond to hazardous crisis resulted from operations as
collecting dangers e-wastes.
2nd step: Identify a specific Hypothesis for the campaign
The hypothesis is the key goal & objective of the campaign that
should be mutually determined based on accurate evidences & assumptions. To
afford effective hypothesis, All the concerned work forces (staffs & teams)
have to agree upon it before beginning in the execution process.
A successful zero waste campaign need continuous evaluation for the results. Thus, a trustworthy measurement system needs to be set frequently. This measurement system should consist of a slate of elements. Your campaign could include elements as (taking a sample of a specific number of landfill bags every day – determine the contamination percentage – observing the contamination sources – suggest the contaminating elements found in the full bags, dumpsters and bins via means of the artificial intelligence so that the upstream can be easily reached.
4th step: Define KPIs
KPIs refers to Key
Performance Indicators. Identified KPIs helps in keeping the process and
guarantee your campaign consistent flow in the right track.
5th step: Engage with your Stakeholders
The ultimate goal in any campaign is to see the implemented
positive action. In case of the zero waste campaign, the positive action or
behavior is reducing the contamination. Zero waste campaign goal couldn’t be
reached without engaging with the stakeholders through predetermined actionable
perceptions. Thus, communicating the KPIs with the stakeholders can exist via
frequent mails, meetings or even the signage for outreach.

To guarantee continuity in performance & improvement of the
process as (increasing the conversions from the landfills – increase chances for waste reduction –
reducing contamination), the loop of action should be well closed, this will be
obtained through ensuring the repetition of the steps from 1 to 5.
successful example
It worth to mention that University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) & Zabble had receipted the award in the Zero Waste Grant Program of the city of San Francisco’s Department of Environment, through applying those pre-described steps above. (UCSF) & Zabble collaboration started from December 2020 and ended by May 2021 (lasts for 6 months) to reduce 32.2 tons of wastes & landfills to run a zero waste campaigns.
